CHRISTMAS

Silent Night - TTBB

Barbershop arrangement of the favorite Christmas hymn. This is actually not my own arrangement. I heard this performed by The Vocal Majority, and I loved the arrangement so much, I wanted to perform with with my own barbershop friends. So I transcribed it from the recording.

Follow The Star - SSA
This is a simple little song for three-part women's choir accompanied by accoustic guitar. The women's voices represent the choir of angels heralding the birth of Christ to the shepherds, and inviting all to follow the star.

HYMN ARRANGEMENTS

Behold the Wounds in Jesus' Hands - SATB + Piano New

This hymn by John V. Pearson and David R. Naylor was published in the Ensign Magazine in April, 2009. I adapted it for our ward choir to sing on Easter Sunday. I particularly enjoyed writing the third verse which starts out quasi-a-capella, meaning the only accompaniment at that time is the piano right-hand playing the chorus melody from "I Stand All Amazed". The melody from another well-known hymn works its way into the accompaniment later in that same verse. Can you tell which hymn?

For the Strength of the Hills - SATB + Organ
I arranged this for a Stake Conference in 2005. It's a rousing and demanding arrangement that will work best with a large choir. If your choir only has a few people per part, you'll have trouble being heard over the organ. So, announce it in Sunday School, bring refreshments, offer a 3% discount on tithing... whatever it takes to get people to come to choir. It'll be worth it!

I Believe In Christ - SSATB + Organ
A somewhat challenging arrangement of this beautiful hymn, what with its two key changes, and almost-a-cappella three-part women's section. It also calls for solo Baritone and Soprano voices at times. Hey, you won't be bored, anyway.

In Hymns Of Praise - SATB + Piano
This is a very simple arrangement that can be prepared by most choirs with a single rehearsal. A nice option when the Stake Clerk calls you up and says, "Say, can your ward choir sing in Stake Conference in two weeks?" Sounds nice with organ, too.

Praise to the Man - SATB + Piano
This arrangement is a lot of fun to sing. It's not too challenging to learn, but your choir will need to watch carefully as the rythms frequently deviate from the expected. Oh, and be prepared to step up the volume a bit; you can't sing this one mezzo-anything. I dare you to try. It's fortes and "issimos" all the way, baby!

If your choir has trouble finding their notes for the key change, have your pianist change to the new key 4 measures earlier. That will give your choir members a chance to hear their new note before they have to sing it.

Saints, Behold How Great Jehovah - SATB + Organ
What an inspiring song about the Restoration! I had a lot of fun arranging this one. The choir will love how easy it is to learn. Your organist, however, will find it quite challenging. If your organ does not have a "bells" stop, you can do the bells part in octaves on the piano, or maybe someone in your ward has as set of tubular bells in their basement?... Yeah, just go with the piano idea.

Savior's Love Medley - SATB, Primary, Organ & Piano
This is a medley of the primary song "I Feel My Savior's Love" and the hymn "Our Father's Love". You can perform this with the whole primary, or just a group of senior primary students, but make sure you have enough of them to balance the choir and organ when they sing together.

There Is Sunshine In My Soul Today - TB + Piano
I love this delightful song. Its simple, sweet melody and happy message cheers your heart and brightens your day. This arrangement is for two-part men's choir with piano accompaniment. I first performed this in a Sacrament Meeting with the all the Melchizedek Priesthood singing, and I liked it so much, I've been looking for more opportunities to sing it again ever since.
